Applying for Degree/Consolidated marksheet after Name Change

Scenario: My wife had got her name changed in final year of her study. She had published it in the Government Gazette and also had a letter from Controller of Examinations - Anna university that her name had been changed in the university records. But the consolidated marksheet and the degree certificate held her old name. When we went to apply for marskheet transcripts, the officials told that the transcripts to be issued would also hold the same name that is in the Degree/Consolidated marksheet.

Suggestion: The transcript officials suggested us to reach out to the Controller of Examinations office, which was next to the Transcripts Office-Anna University. I have marked the location below.

Documents needed:
  1. Original Consolidated Marksheet with the old name.
  2. Original Degree certificate with the old name.
  3. Request letter to the 'Controller of Examinations' to provide the updated Degree certificate/Consolidated marksheet with new name.
  4. Demand Draft in favour of "Controller of Examinations, Anna University, Chennai - 600 025" payable at Chennai.
    • DD for Rs.500/- for Degree certificate
    • DD for Rs.200/- for Consolidated marksheet
  5. Self-addressed A3 Envelope (available in the Co-operative store marked below) with Rs.60/- Postage. (Stamp is available in the nearest post office marked below).

WES Transcript application procedure for Anna University

RECENT UPDATE: WES doesn’t accept sealed envelopes sent directly by applicants anymore! Effective Dec 1, it accepts only the sealed envelopes directly sent by the university! Please contact the transcripts office for more information. I will update if I get any info. Thanks for understanding!

I recently went through the process of applying Transcripts for my marksheets and Degree certificate from Anna University (Affiliated colleges) for my immigration process. Doing so, I went through a few problems and thought of sharing them on the web, which might help someone who does the same.

Personal Notes:

  • I went on a Friday and there was no crowd.
  • There is a small room, right side to the office, where you can sit and fill in forms.
  • Office is open on all days except Sunday.
  • Working hours are 10am - 5:45 pm
  • Lunch Hours 1:30pm - 2pm
  • Office Contact Number: 044-22357247
  • You need to walk a lot if you need to take DD and Xerox, so its better if you can take them a day before.
  • For my wife, there was a change in Name which was already taken in the University records, but not reflected in the degree certificate/Consolidated Marksheet. So, transcripts office refused to provide transcripts under the changed name. So, I had to follow another procedure, which I have explained in the below post. This may be helpful for those who have done name change and need transcript under new name.
  • Edit: Passport size photograph is mostly not needed if you studied in Grade system. To be in safer side, its better to carry one or two passport size photographs in hand to avoid any hassles on the spot.

The Cheating Machine

I was in class 5. My school didn't have many rich kids with it, neither in money nor in education. So, it was very easy to spot out those somewhat-richer kids, who atleast managed to wear ironed uniform clothes and those somewhat-brighter kids, who atleast managed to score 80+ in Mathematics.

Tony was of the first kind. But when it came to learning, he could never compete with me. Not because I studied better, but that the kid was not of my class. He was 2 years younger to me. Class 3, section 'B'. His thatched roof classroom was exactly opposite to mine. Tony's parents were abroad, and the kid grew up with his grandmother and sister. There were always talks about Tony and his new stationery things, those he brought everyday to school. Tony was the favourite to almost every teacher in the school. He was as cute as those kids who talk non-sense and get most likes in Facebook funny videos. He brought Magic slates, Multi-colour pens, Car-like sharpeners, Magic erasers, pencils that never get small, etc., to classroom. My friends and I watched the kid with great envy. Unlike the kids now, who learn A,B,C,D on their own iPads, we were the 90's kids who kept our jaws open when teacher showed Magnetic Alphabets getting stick to the iron board.

That was the time when computers started getting into Indian homes. We didn't know much about Computers. To be more frank, we had never heard of that word. I am pretty sure neither my teachers heard of that word before. Tony was the kid from whom we learnt that word first.

Computer!

We all started dreaming about how big that machine would be, how good would it be to have the machine with us, even though we had no idea about what a computer could do. And one day, Tony said that his father was getting him a computer for his next birthday. Not only he who was excited, it was the entire school (both teachers and students), who became very much excited to see that machine. I hardly remember any other word that I spoke with my parents at home those days, except "Computer". During break time, lunch intervals, travel time and even in that 2 minute-gap between two classes, we started talking about the machine that Tony would be getting in a week. There were a lot of rumours about the machine. Some of them were like:

Computers can cook food for you, Computers can find whether you say truth or lie, Computers can produce a new thing if you draw and feed the picture into it (Shaka Laka Boom Boom effect), etc.

And the day came. Tony took a week leave after his birthday. And everyone were waiting for the kid to come back to school. After a week leave, he came back to school with a colorful cartoon printed backpack, a hanging water bottle with attached drinking cup, a new magnetic pencil box, color pens and a multiple tip pencil in which tips are stacked one over others (Wow!), a square shaped Tiffin box, and a lot more. Even though we were seniors to the kid, we didn't feel ashamed to go to him and see all those things. Why should we, when our teachers were on the queue before us to see all those things?

And then Tony slowly started talking about the magical machine in his home, that he had got as birthday gift from his dad. Teachers, along with us, were around him listening to how good that machine was. When Tony said the machine would reply to us, if we talk to it, we were listening to him with mouth wide open.

Days rolled on with our excitement for seeing that computer growing up everyday, by the daily-rumours about it. And then this incident happened one day, all of a sudden. We could see from our class, Tony getting punished by his class teacher very severely. We were surprised, as the teacher would never beat him for his small mistakes. But that day, the teacher was very furious that he broke the cane while punishing him. If the school's apple kid gets punished, every teacher should gather and inquire about it - Unwritten law of my school. The same happened. Almost every teacher went into the class, asked the class teacher what had happened, then exclaimed, became furious, slapped Tony and left away. We were in a shock, mixed with some cruel happiness (that basic human character) inside.

After an hour we came to know the reason why everyone trashed Tony to the floor. The reason was a complete shocker: "Tony had asked his computer machine to do all his home work and the computer had done all his work for him, and hence he was punished on charges of forgery and cheating." When Tony claimed that computer can't do homework on its own, nobody was ready to believe him.

I still remember the question that my class teacher asked his class teacher, "Ma'am, when the computer can cook food everyday, why can it not do his homework? And this handwriting is not of Tony's. This is very legible. That computer machine should have done it."

It went on so... And till last, nobody accepted that he did those assignments.

Years rolled on.. And now, Tony works for Apple Inc. as a Strategy consultant, iOS Systems Team, California. Am sure, he would be thinking about all these stupid things and would be laughing. And yes, we are not still so under-developed, but we do have atleast the basic knowledge that computers don't cook food :)

A full-stop after the Death.

'Amma' - It was a common noun till she took it for herself. Lot of oppositions and controversies over the name. Almost everyone criticized her for the name. When she announced welfare schemes under the name 'Amma', everyone went mad and called it an autocratic move. When she proclaimed that she knew what should be done to her children as an 'Amma', everyone made fun of her. But only on the day of her cremation, they understood that there were millions of people who believed Jayalalithaa as their 'Amma'. She was one such leader, who with her iron fist, protected the state against violence and Rowdyism. She was one such leader, who with her embracing voice, won a billion hearts.

Jaya was born into a very affluent family of Karnataka. With a strong desire to enter Cinema, she came to Tamil Nadu and with her will power, she became a lead actress. As a gift to her loyalty to Ex-CM M.G.R., she was given an entry card to politics. After MGR's death, Jaya declared herself as his political heir. She is truly an inspiration for women who wants to be independent and to succeed in career.

Such a wonderful leader, core politician and a pride woman, did not know how to deal with life and friends. May be, because of her bitter past experiences, she had always kept a very small circle around her. She never believed anybody around her. She had always been rude and strict to even her devotees. She failed to understand that people around her prayed her feet not because of love and affection they had on her, but only because of the fear that they had on her. Despite having no family for her, she stashed a lot of assets for her. She failed to understand that humans are mortal and assets won't come along. Her innumerable assets and fame made everyone around her cast eyes on her position. She as a politician, has destroyed the careers of many other politicians. But she failed to understand that the people around her were learning the same Tantra to use it on her. Even though she was a good leader, she was an ultimate failure in life.

Those who were around her during her cremation didn't cry out of pain. Just a publicity stunt that she would have done if her leader had died. You reap what you sow!

Yes indeed, as 'Amma', you have left a lot to your children to learn.

When ten rupee notes were thrown inside the sandal casket in which Jaya was kept at last, I remembered the dialogue from Tamil Movie Sivaji, "Idha kooda unnala eduthutu poga mudiadhu!".

Good Bye Jaya!

Kolar - A day-out from Bangalore

When I searched for a good place to roam around Bangalore, I found Kolar as one such. I have always wanted to visit historical places and temples around the place where I stay. So, 'Kolar google search' fascinated me that I decided to visit the place at least once.

One fine day, we got that chance. We started from Bangalore at around 6 o'clock in the morning. For breakfast, we stopped at Nandi Grand Restaurant which is located 7 kms after the Hoskote Toll gate. I have marked the location below.

This is an average rated restaurant with variety of foods, and its open from 6:30AM - 11:45 PM. You will get a decent food here.

We planned for a very short trip as our parents came along with us. So, we directly went to Sri Someshwara Temple in Kolar. This temple is a very ancient one, dating back to 14th century. It is well-maintained and has a mind-blowing architecture. The sculptures in the temple are mind-blowing. The temple has a Kalyana Mandapa, Vasantha Mandapa and a Goddess Parvathi Shrine inside. The Kalyana mandapa (Marriage Hall) has a number of pillars engraved with beautiful stone carvings and sculptures. They depict men riding horses, elephants, etc. The temple's tall tower clearly conveys that it was constructed by the Cholas who ruled these places since 11th century, who were then dethroned by Chalukyas. The temple was then expanded by the Vijayanagara empire who later ruled these places.

I took a few photographs of them :

...

Then, we headed to Kolaramma Temple which is very nearer to Sri Someshwara temple. Kolaramma temple is a very small temple but a beautiful one. This was built by Rajendra Chola I in 1012-1045 A.D. You can still see ancient Tamil letters inscribed in the walls around the temple. It is believed that the Chamundi Devi (Goddess Durga) killed Asura Mahisasura in Kolar and the deity in the temple is in furious state. Thats the reason why we are allowed to worship the Goddess only through a mirror. And there is a Hundi in the temple in scorpion style, which is believed to be good if you drop a coin into the hole, everytime you visit the temple. I will update more about this Hundi after my next visit to the temple. There are a few more stories about the temple, which I will research and update after my next visit. This temple is maintained by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Although Someshwara temple was bigger than this, there is something that made me love the Kolaramma temple a lot.

Then we headed to the Kotilingeswara temple, which is 30KM away from Kolaramma temple. Do not take the road that the Google Maps show, as it is not maintained well. You can take the Bangaparpet road which is far better than the one suggested by G-Maps (Just 2 Kms more)

Kotilingeswara temple doesnt have any ancient sculptures, but the small shrines inside are well maintained. The temple looks modern, and has nearly 90 Lakh Lingams inside. The main Lingam and the Nandi statue are so huge that you will definitely get nice Cover Photos. This has a lot of tourist attractions, unlike the other two temples I had mentioned.

I have shared the locations of these temples below.

On the way back to Bangalore, we went to a Non-Veg restaurant 'Delicious'. The food was really delicious. I have shared the location below. The restaurant is open from 12 PM to 12AM.

If you know more stories about these temples, please do leave them in comments.

A track to Nowhere?

I was fifteen. As every kid of the age does, I too was getting to school only under the compulsion of my parents. During my Maths classes, I often spent my time knocking the heads in the previous row, and sitting humbly when they turned back to find out the black sheep. I never knew that those missed classes would be of more importance in my career later.
Winter vacation was over. And the time for teachers to distribute the answer sheets of Half-yearly exams came. My Maths teacher entered the classroom and started distributing the answer sheets. She used to distribute them in descending order of the scores. That means, the least scorer's answer sheet will be given at the last.
Vivin and I were best friends, since I had joined that school. We were sitting together in second to the last bench. Something similar was going inside both of our minds! Whether it's me, or Vivin, this time? the least scorer! Our hands were trembling. Within a while, she yelled out my name. Vivin's face paled out as the opposite happened in mine. I became suddenly happier, when I understood that I had overscored Vivin. With great pride, I walked towards the teacher to get only some heavy blows on my back. I cried out loudly and then walked back to my place with a tiny smile to watch Vivin blown down more heavier.
After my teacher got back to the silent mode, I went to her and asked, "Ma'am, I really hate this Geometry! Why do they ask us to draw such unnatural things?".
"Dear, this is the only question which can fetch you more marks with less effort! Do you really want to lose those marks?", she told with a bright face.
"But Ma'am, will they be of any use in my future?", I asked, scratching my head.
She didn't give me the answer. She was busy answering the questions of other kids. Perhaps, she didn't have an answer for my question and pervaded as if she didn't notice my second question.
And whenever I asked the question, she ignored me or she scolded me not to repeat the same question again. But I was not at all aware of what I was studying and why I was mugging up all those things. But I did, for the sake of my examinations. And so did my least score competitor.
We finished our schooling in a very similar pattern. And then I found that the race is not over yet! I joined Mechanical Engineering without even knowing what Mechanical Engineers do. The bald geeky professor came to the classes and did the same what my Maths teacher did in my school. But this time, there was a difference in me; Yes, I was not in Uniforms! Probably, this was the only difference I could find in myself. I got used to it and I stopped complaining about them. Life passed and so did I, with my B.E..
Finally the day came, when I had to apply the skills that I earned during my school and college days. Yes, I joined a company as a Mechanical Engineer - Trainee. I proudly suffixed B.E. to my name in all social networks, and went to the company. The manager welcomed me and introduced me to my fellow staff. I proudly shook hands and took my job. I had to make a lot of calculations, designs, plans, schedules, etc. I got suffocated on the first day itself. Scolded by Boss, embarrassed by technicians, been a laughing stock for my fellow staff, I felt like strangling the necks of the Maths teacher and the bald geeky professor!
"Had my teacher told me that the Geometry that she taught would be the basics for my Graphics, and had that professor told me that the Mechanics would be the basics for all the calculations in my career, I would have atleast learnt them with a greater-than-zero interest, wouldn't I? I don't even know the name of the machine which I am standing in front of. What wrong did I do? I followed your commands and learnt all those sucking formulas, and still I do not even know where to apply them. Even a machine operator knows more about the process, but I don't. Then why the hell should I tag myself as a Mechanical Engineer?", I telepathized to my teachers and professors. Standing weakly against the pillar in front of the company, I threw my tag away on the road. Gathering strength, I started walking out.
On my way home, I could hear lot of people laughing at me. I could see my boss scolding me, the same way my maths teacher blew my back. Algebraic equations and scientific notations started queuing in front of me to collapse me down. I found stars and planets revolving around my head, like Tinkle comic cartoons. About to fall down, I was walking with my least strength, when I found a decent man lying on the road with his bag down. I ran and picked him up. Some guys and I helped him, called the ambulance and sent him to the hospital. I turned back and found the tag of the guy.
I took it to read it again and again: "Vivin - Graduate Engineer Trainee". With wide open eyes, I telepathized, "I know that feel, bro".

Those three words!

It was when I did not even have the least hope of getting myself into a good job. I was roughly moving with no idea of what was happening then!
On that particular day, Dad called me,
"You have got a good news, call letter for an Interview!"
"Interview Call letter? From where?", I exclaimed.
"For who cleared the Assistant Manager cadre - Written exam for Karur Vysya Bank!".
I was on cloud nine. Because till then, I had got Interview call e-Mails, that too were only from spammers. I started imagining myself in the Assistant Manager seat of Karur Vysya Bank, signing and sealing the documents, and floating in a pool of Pubic money!
"Dhinesh! Are you following me? Interview is on next Friday! Get prepared!", dad shouted.
"Okay dad! I will start working towards it from today", I firmly held the mobile off, with a confident hope of getting to the position.
I started moving to my apartment, which was a '2 Bedroom, a Hall and a Kitchen' - setup, shared by five of us. My colleagues were uniquely different from each other. But we shared a common ray of understanding with each other, that made us move hassle-free!
When I entered my apartment, I found my nerves tight and firm that wanted me to work hard for the interview next week. I changed to my usual nightwear and sat down to browse something for the interview. One of my colleagues came shouting,
"Hey did you see? The trailer of upcoming movie 'I' is released yesterday!", and ordered me, "Come on. Open YouTube!"
I could find my nerves loosening my body. I could see my fingers typing w-w-w-y-o-u-t-u-b-e-c-o-m!
And the night went happily with YouTube.
The same continued till the day before my Interview came. I was travelling to Karur Head office without even knowing how am I going to answer their Banking related questions! The only satisfaction was the elligibility for the cadre. Yes, its B.E./B.Tech only ! So, probably every person will come like me only, I convinced myself.
I reached the office on 9:30 a.m. I was half an hour late. I found that the entire auditorium was filled with people, and definitely yes, everyone was an Engineer! To make it sound obvious, 'a failed Engineer'! Certificate verification was going on. I went there to submit my certificates and settled back in the last row, thanks to my last token.
I was watching people moving for the interview process. Nearly seventy to eighty people were there for the interview. I started observing everyone. Some of them were very professionally dressed and they were really looking like Managers of Karur Vysya Bank. I thought of listening to what those professional people in my previous row were discussing about. I gently leaned to the front.
"Hey, why do these banks insist on KYC nowadays?"
I was barely thinking, "What KYC? May be some New 'Kentucky Yolked Chicken'? But why do banks insist on that?"
Someone said, "This 'Know Your Customer' norms are getting very serious nowadays that they want us to know about the details of customer, so that the bank can help them easily!" and the group cheered up, "Yeah, you are right!"
I was exclaiming to myself, "I have been such an idiot till now! Mistaking 'Know Your Customer' for 'Kentucky Yolked Chicken'!".
Some people were trying to get some soft corner with the employees of the office. And one such person came near me and told, "Shit! Only three people are going to be selected today!".
I asked, "From this entire crowd?"
"Yes".
Everyone started preparing more rigorously, to be one among the three. I started preparing how to travel to Chennai after the interview is over.
The time was 5:00 p.m. And I was sitting outside the interview hall, with two more persons. Both of them were working already in Karur Vysya Bank as Clerks, and that they have decided to get to a higher level. One of them told there would be some preferences for them as they are their current employees. "Oh", I showed no reaction to him. I started checking Goibibo.com in my smartphone.
After a few minutes, I was sitting in front of two professionally dressed persons, similar to the persons who were talking about KYC. I was the last person left over for the interview! I thought to myself, "Three would have already been selected!"
And the interview was a complete entertainment! They asked something and I replied some non-sense things! He asked me why I decided to take Banking.
And I answered, "because I love 'Numbers' and 'Computers'."
He nodded and said, "Yeah, of course, I too love Numbers!".
"And that's why you are here, sir, in Banking!".
He laughed and then asked, "Why do you want to join a bank after a Mechanical Engineering degree?".
"Because I did not get a job with that degree and I hope Banking provides a good salary".
"So you think salary is your major concern".
"Yes sir, of course, its salary that concerns. The practical and the real concern for everyone, including me."
The conversation went on. And I came out after 25 minutes.
And two days later, I got an e-mail stating, "Dear Dhinesh Panneer, You have been provisionally selected for the post of Assistant Manager in Karur Vysya Bank."
And I was overwhelmed! Now I have a job that will yield me a decent income throughout my life!
After that amazing day was over, a few questions started budding out of my mind,
"Is this job suitable for you?"
"Is it okay to work in a bank?"
" Even if I have not done my MBA, I would have got this job. Then why the hell did I waste these 2 years in an MBA?"
But later, my inner voice shouted three words at me. And I was satisfied!
Those three words were:
 "Salary - Status - Security"
